At the risk of sounding hipster, I wanted to go back and play Rainbow Six 3. Game won’t even start. After much research its, because Windows 10 blocks old DRM. Tangos win.

But pirates! Pirates are evil (except not really, and they probably wouldn’t buy the game anyways so it isn’t a lost sale), so we need to punish legitimate users too!

Man, one day, Rainbow Six Siege will look like this.

The funny thing is, I bet a pirated copy of RS3 will work.

Yep sounds like the issue is just with Safedisk/Securom so even a no-CD patch should let it run.

As facw said in reply to me -

So you don’t even have to wear the puffy shirt.

And Microsoft blocked that particular DRM scheme because it’s basically a rootkit, which is a form of malware itself.

It’s a good move by Microsoft, and at least one that can be easily dealt with with a no-patch (would have been nice if publishers released these anyone after the initial sales period, but Beyond Egosoft, I can’t think of any who did).

The fun flaw breaking old games that comes to my mind is the fact that even into the early 2000s I think, LucasArts was releasing games with a 16-bit installer program, which then couldn’t run on 64-bit Windows (x86-64 only preserves 16-bit compatibility in 32-bit mode). Then again I remember more modern games like Fallout 3 and Darkstar One not running on 64-bit Windows because of their shitty DRM.

Steam version? Those usually have the kinks worked out for modern OSes.

10 bucks is a bit steep but wait for a humble bundle or sale or something

I love this game man. The best tactical shooter of all time next to SWAT 4 IMO. Strangely, I think download versions still work. Let me see if I can dig up my other copy for you.

Well, Direct2Drive/gamefly need to get their shit together. Once they do I might be able to just float you my copy. All the sudden I have “no purchased games” when I log into D2D.... but I do on gamefly which then directs me back to D2D.

(It wasn’t on steam back when I bought it on D2D)

It kills me that all my old rally games won’t run on Win10. I must have 7 of thise and about 5 version of Need for Speed that are gathering dust. Thinking about reviving one of my old PC just for old games.

That’s what I’m gonna have to do. Now to brave the seedy underbelly of the Internet.

That would be so bomb. Athena Sword refuses to even install. lol

My favorite DRM was the limited number installs. Who needs to install a game more than 3 times.

Unfortunately no. Mine is the CD version, pressed before Steam was even a thing.

Surprisingly, it seems Game Copy World still exists (how long has it been since I last had to go looking for no-cds?) http://www.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_raven_shield.shtml

No idea if it is serving up terrible malware these days, virus scan engaged I guess...

The best way to play these oldies is virtualization. In no time you can setup an XP machine running in your computer using virtual PC or VMware player/workstation (my favorite). Now the virtualization is so good it can use your graphic card as well.

So on the bright side, I have the key but on the not so bright side, Direct2drive no longer has a download link for the client and I’m not sure where to find it for you :(

If you can find a download for the direct2drive Raven Shield, I can toss you a key that should activate it.

That’s probably the best long term solution. Found a No CD crack in the mean time.
